Sink the Bismarck is a 1960s black & white war film about the chase and sinking of the German battle ship the Bismarck.

The film was based upon the book 'Last Nine Days of the Bismarck' by C.S Forester. The film had its world premiere at the  Odeon Leicester Square on 11 February 1960 in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh.

This film is significant to us because it features a blind veteran in the cast. Esmond Knight who was a famous actor at the time, was in fact blinded on board the HMS Prince of Wales whie serving as a gunnery officer during its battle with the Bismarck. After being injured in battle and losing sight in one of this eyes, he came to our centre in Church Stretton and partook in various drama activities which were run there. This experience restored his confidence and he left Church Stretton to continue with a sucessful acting career. In the film Sink the Bismarck, he in fact plays the captain of the HMS Prince of Wales.
